GET PAID
How do I invoice for work?
Once you’ve signed up a client or completed some work, it’s time to get paid. Invoicing sounds simple, but there are a couple of things worth getting right from the start.
How to Invoice Clients as a New Business in New Zealand
Not sure how to invoice your first clients? Here’s what to include, how to handle GST, and the easiest way to get paid.
GST

If you’re not GST registered, do not add GST to your prices. If you are registered, you must add it — and you need to hold onto that 15% and pay it to IRD. If you’re unsure whether you’re registered, you probably aren’t. You only need to register once your sales exceed $60,000 per year (more on that in the GST article below).

What to include on an invoice:

Your accounting software (Xero is the most common) will have a template that covers most of this. At a minimum, include:
-
Customer name
-
A unique invoice number (e.g. INV-001)
-
A description of the work completed
-
The amount owing
-
Your bank account details
Once it’s done, send it directly from your software or save it as a PDF and attach it to an email.

If you’re not yet using accounting software, there are free templates in Microsoft Word or a quick Google search will find plenty of options online.
