Advanced Budgeting

At $3m+, your budget needs to be more than a spreadsheet. Here’s what advanced budgeting looks like and how to make it work for your business.

How to Build a Sophisticated Business Budget — A Guide for Large NZ Businesses

A basic budget is better than no budget. But at this level, you need something more robust.

What advanced budgeting involves

A sophisticated budget includes:

  • Revenue forecasts built from the bottom up — by product, service line, or customer segment

  • Cost budgets that reflect the real structure of the business, including headcount plans

  • Scenario modelling — what does the budget look like if revenue comes in 10% below plan? What if a key cost increases?

  • Integration with your cash flow forecast so you can see the cash impact of the budget, not just the profit impact

The process

This isn’t something you build in an afternoon. It typically involves a series of meetings with your accountant or CFO advisor to agree on the assumptions, build the model, and stress-test it before it’s finalised.

Once it’s in place, the budget becomes the reference point for all your monthly reporting. Every conversation about performance starts with: where are we against budget, and why?
